Dating During a Divorce - Should You Do It?

Posted by Eric Labovitz | May 26, 2020 | 0 Comments

Getting a divorce takes time and, during that time, it is natural to feel lonely and wish for romantic companionship. However, if you begin dating before your divorce is finalized, you may run into a variety of problems that may make this already difficult situation harder. If you have children, dating so soon can make things particularly complicated and potentially affect their ability to cope with the changes brought on by your divorce.

Take Time Away from Dating

Dating someone new can be an incredibly validating experience and certainly give you the boost of confidence you likely need during this process. Unfortunately, while the immediate gratification may be great, the consequences are often greater. Even if your spouse initiated the divorce, seeing you date so soon might raise doubt regarding your fidelity during the marriage. As a result, you may find yourself in an even more contentious situation, which can lead to a longer, drawn-out, and more expensive process.

Additionally, as previously mentioned, if you have children, your relationship with them may suffer. Between your divorce, work, and dating life, you will not have much time to dedicate to them. They might resent you for focusing on a partner rather than on helping them adjust to the changes your divorce will bring. Now is the time for you and your family to focus on healing, so you can start your new life on the right note.

Moreover, you need some time for yourself to recover from this major life event. The last thing you want to do is repeat any of the mistakes that led to your divorce, so hold off on dating for now and partake in some much-needed self-care. There is no need to rush back into dating, especially while you are still trying to work out the details of your divorce. You will have far too much on your plate and, ultimately, it may create problems in more than one area of your life.
